Luggage Rights

You may be entitled to up to £520 lost or damaged luggage compensation.

Unfortunately, travel doesn’t always go according to plan. Read on to find out what your air passenger rights are and how to claim lost luggage compensation.

Missing luggage compensation

1. United States Baggage Claim Steps:

Delayed luggage can be more than an inconvenience; it can disrupt your entire travel plan. Here’s how to handle a delay in the arrival of your bags in USl:

  1. Keep your travel documents, like your boarding pass and baggage check tags, within reach.
  2. Report missing luggage immediately, ideally before exiting the airport. Airline policies differ, so be sure to check.
  3. Fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport, noting the reference number given to you.
  4. If you paid a baggage fee, inquire about a rebate from the airline.
  5. Utilise the airline’s online tracking tools with your PIR number to monitor your luggage’s status.
  6. Save all receipts for essential items purchased due to the delay.
  7. Submit your claim to the airline, typically within 45 days from your flight, even if your luggage is still MIA.

2. EU and International Baggage Compensation Process:

When traversing international skies and your bags lag behind or are lost, adhere to these guidelines:

  • Retain your boarding pass and luggage receipts.
  • Notify the airline of your baggage status promptly.
  • Fill out a PIR and secure the file reference number.
  • Track your bags online using the airline’s tracking tools.
  • Keep receipts for any essential items purchased due to the delay.
  • File a claim with the airline once your luggage is returned, or after 21 days from when the bags were first delayed.

3. When Luggage Goes Missing: U.S. Domestic Flights

Lost luggage requires a timely and methodical approach:

  • Keep your PIR reference number handy.
  • Save all receipts for essential purchases.
  • List the contents of your lost luggage, with proof of ownership when possible.
  • File a claim with the airline, adhering to their specified deadline.
Has the airline lost your luggage in the last 3 years?

4. For Lost Bags on EU and International Voyages:

The process for international lost luggage mirrors the domestic approach with an added layer of vigilance due to varying international regulations:

  • Maintain the file reference number given post-PIR.
  • Preserve all receipts for necessary purchases.
  • Create a detailed list of your lost luggage contents with any available proof.
  • Initiate a claim with the airline, providing all pertinent receipts and documentation.

5. Addressing Damaged Baggage:

Damage to your luggage requires immediate action:

  • Do not leave the airport before documenting the damage with the airline.
  • Fill out a damage claim form or PIR while at the airport.
  • Allow the airline to inspect and negotiate repair or replacement.
  • Submit a claim for any damaged items within your luggage.

6. EU and International Damaged Baggage Claims:

If your luggage is damaged during an EU or international flight, the protocol is similar:

  • Keep your boarding pass and luggage receipts.
  • Report the damage immediately, within seven days of receiving your bags.
  • Fill out a PIR and have your luggage inspected.
  • File a claim for the damaged contents.
